What about The Climate Crisis?
What is your position in the City of Edmonton's role in the climate crisis?
The city of Edmonton needs to work in partnership with the Provincial and Federal governments in this endeavor. We also have to remember that the budget and limited powers constrain the city as a municipal government. Some examples of tangible and practical actions we can take are:
1. Doing more to protect the North Saskatchewan River valley is the largest urban park in North America.
2. Ensure buildings are sustainable in the long term.
3. Encourage density by infill where it is warranted.
4. Doing a better job highlighting the economic opportunities presented by an energy transition.
Moving away from a catastrophic tone is imperative; as a municipality, we should focus on positive and practical statements. What we need to offer are solutions rather than only talking about the problems.
Business leader Michael Porter argued that government has it all wrong on environmentalism. Rather than the government mandating compliance, better outcomes will occur when business owners experience the benefit of being green and view waste as inefficient and harder to compete. It is at that moment we will transcend the issue.
